Oh are yours super smooth, that is what I would have assumed too based on pics that I saw. I think its the kind of smooth that doesn’t bother my fingers much.
It’s actually quite similar in feeling to the laser ablation keycaps that come on most OEM gamer boards if you know what that feels like. I noticed this because I was swapping the stock CSTM65 caps out for these. Quite similar texture.
It’s all subjective of course. I’m not saying it’s bad. It’s just not what I prefer. GMK feels neutral in texture to me. My favorite feeling is MT3 ABS and DSA caps. They both have a very slight texture increase from GMK
GMK Daifuku was kind of on my radar when the GB launched in 2021, but I didn’t bite. I saw a pic of the set mounted on a board the other day and instantly wanted it. I was lucky to find it at Kibou out of Hong Kong and at GB pricing. It doesn’t look like the renders, but in the best way possible (for me at least).
Didn’t I order this yesterday? MYNT3D 3D Pen Pro.
Looks pretty much like a variation of the soldering pen I use. USB powered.
Ironstone Classic-TKL
Now to search for keycaps. Looks really nice with gray, white, and cream/beige. Top contenders are Muted, Umka, Foundation, ASCII, Beta, Klassiker, Alchemy
Surprisingly did not look good with more brownish caps. Sloth, Sandstorm, Chocolatier, Chladni, Café, etc…
We shall see
Here’s a peek at DCS Alchemy
I think it has just a touch more red in it than in my photo here. The photos on Novelkeys are quite accurate. It does appear that the legends on Alchemy are pretty much the same color as the case, which is cool.
I built this one without any foam. The typing feel is better IMO, but I wouldn’t refer to it as overly flexible on the main alpha area. You can make the PCB bottom out around the corners this way if you press firmly. (Don’t do that). I prefer it without any foam. I’ll have to use it a while to be sure, but this is my favorite build so far of the 3.
Something quite magical about Roller linear switches and DCS caps. I wish they were lower pitched, but man, the feel is just somethign you need to try.
Very cool color. I wonder if something like KKB Retro Mixed Lights or DSS Late Harvest would work on this?
I have the KKB set. I can try tomorrow
@fatalruin The alphas look nice for sure but the red accents are just a bit too red to go with the case. It doesn’t look bad at all but it’s the kind of thing that I know would have me changing them off after a few days
Alchemy looks pretty good on it! Also I was thinking DCS Honeywell might be a good match. You might have to forgo the red accents, but the off white & grey should slap with the ironstone classic.
Grays do look good. I was heavily considering Muted. Also was looking at a lot of beige, but something about cream works best on this color. I found the definitive set from my collection by accident, but it’s perfect IMO. I’m going to take some photos tomorrow when it’s not so clouds and dark out
Today I got an extra Protozoa Foundation top in the mail. I own a couple but I never thought much of the fade top until I saw it used on the Mars Cadet product page on Novelkeys. I’ll post some photos of the full setup when I get the keycaps in a few days. ETA is tomorrow.
Mars Cadet!
Was really surprised to see the solar array novelties were double shot using the metallic gold plastic. It has swirls like the caps on MV Expo.
I believe this is the most double shot legend GMK has ever done as far as keycap surface. Quite intricate spacing, too. You’d definitely see if something was off.
Good.Kind.Pure nail polish arrived. Tried it on pins of a switch with a rattly leaf and inside + hole on a loose keycap. Dries in 60 seconds.
Hard to see the small drops I placed at the root of the two pins. I also placed a drop at the exterior bottom of switch where stem hits to see if that affects the sound and how if so. I used the brush that came with nail polish this time but I think dripping with a metal pin would’ve been more precise.
Initial result is promising (keycap fits more snugly and loose contact noise abated) but only half the story if they wear out too fast or chips too much. If they don’t last long enough or those chips gets inside the switch, search will continue.
UPDATE: Not a difficult mod but, like diamond polishing, could be too hardcore.
Photographed switch is a frankenswitch (Mekanisk Ultramarine V2 top/stem + Gat. Black Ink bottom housing + 58g CK Slow Spring) with overly thick and sweet woody sound.
UPDATE2: Urgh. Going back to work before I actually try a crazy thought: What would PCB underside coated with nail polish instead of tape mod sound like?
