Interesting Finds & Heads-Ups

This isn’t new - just more of a PSA: this is, bar-none, my favorite USB-C cable:

I was about to write and ask that they sell these until I realized, oh wait, they already do… I finally got around to pulling mine out of the bag today, and it’s just right. Literally everything I would ever want from a rubberized cable.

It’s got a certain quality that I absolutely love in cables: it behaves like a wet noodle.

That is, it doesn’t hold any shape, it isn’t firm or stiff, doesn’t need straightening - it just easily flexes and falls into whatever shape gravity dictates. A strangely rare quality in cables, but an absolute winner for me. Great for keyboards, absolute perfection for game controllers.

A couple requests for @mgsickler - other colors including the black that came with my Classic, and a braided version that behaves the same way.

I have some old braided USB mini cables that otherwise noodle just like these Classic ones do, and I’ve been looking for a modern equivalent for literal years. If you guys made a cloth-covered version of your current rubberized masterpieces, I don’t think I’d ever use anything else, and would absolutely stock up on them. Hoard them, even. I’d be willing to part with one of my old favorite cables if it would help you guys as a reference and would happily send one to you, ha.

Working on new colors soon!

I can also check into a braided version as well.

Huh, I never realized these were following an ISO standard! And while the ones in use for keyboards, the whole ISO700 set is massive and has some amazing bizarre/specific icons.

Vacuum cleaner? You mean the Roman centurion playing ice hockey in a galea, with a golf putter and an over-dimensional puck?

Here is a link on Wikimedia that is slightly easier on the browser than the iso.org link, btw.

So we meet again, old friend. *clenches fist*

Finally tried out some of those PCB flex cut blockers I got from Ordinary Labs today.

They actually work pretty good! Definitely tightens up the sound a good bit if they’ll actually slot into the flexcut like they’re supposed to. Although even just having them sitting loose above the flex cuts (they won’t fit in all flex cuts, I have some PCBs that the the cuts are too thin for it them to fit) still helps a decent bit to take away the hollowness from the flex cuts! So they’re definitely pretty handy to have IMO.

is the head cover on the c end slim enough? (i have odd needs because i have hacked up topres with tiny cable exit wells in the backside that need the most slim and minimal usb-connector housings)

It’s pretty slim, but not the slimmest; here it is next to the smallest one I have (excuse the grody digits):

Classic-TKL WKL tops are now available (so far in black, beige, and clear), in addition to some new plates including what looks to be heat-treated titanium:

These plates have been updated with wider tolerances to better accommodate different stabilizers.

Damn, I really like this line of boards. Seems like now you could combine one of the new tops with a GLO version and make a mullet board (business up top and party in the back).

I’m not sure what kind legs these boards typically have but it it’s supported by NK_ and consumers for a while there are a ton of possibilities. Maybe a ZMK BLE PCB could be offered as an upgrade? Or Cip could make an EC PCB (if the existing ones don’t already fit).

I’m loving mine so far, seems like the highest quality plastic board I own. Would be my favorite TKL if not for my Class80 R1 (a totally unfair comparison at like 4x the price), and would probably be my daily if I didn’t prefer 65%.

Oh man. I’d like it if NK_ made a Classic-65…

That’s very cool. I’m hoping that at some point they might offer a winkeyless plate so that if you have the clear top, you don’t see the hole in the plate where the switch on the Windows key goes.

Have they released the plate file? I know you know this already but one could always have one made w/o the WK hole. I know this is coming from a completely different place as where this board is targeted but I just generally accept that I’m going to have to make my own plate anyways.

edit: Since I asked a question w/o even doing the slightest bit of research, I’ll answer my own. NK_ DID release the plate file right on the plate file page that dropped today (just expand the Resources section below the “add to cart” button).

What config would you guys pick out?

(Works best on desktop)

The name makes for some confusion when looking at the configs. I would assume “Zero Solder” was hotswap, but it’s the Zero, Solder version.

The cork bottom with an alum top looks really tempting to me. I have a feeling the cork bottom will make for a super deep sounding board! As far as colors go I really like the emerald green anno with the gold accents even though I usually favor more matchable colors. In fact seeing that config comes out to only $195 with a solder PCB got me struggling to not order one right now LOL!

I feel like there are quite a few interesting ideas in this board, but I am not sure I am interested…

  • All cork bottom is interesting
  • PCB gasket mount is a interesting mount
  • I like the accent bars and that they are configurable are cool, but that seems like a large bottom lip too me

I think this could be really cool if you had one keyset you liked, and then really designed around that. It seems to me that a lot of the sample photos went that route and they came out really nice.

Was thinking the exact same thing.

Agreed, I’ve been playing around with it this morning and trying to figure out which keycaps sets I have or always wanted would match up with a particular color scheme.

I really like the photos they have of 800, Olivia, and Tribal.
