Interesting Finds & Heads-Ups

Yes, they are steadily improving to the point of perfection. I remember when the concept of 5 sided reverse dyesub first came to be. It was a laughable concept because the results were laughable. But not anymore!

And Yuzu playground uses Keyreative to make their custom sets? So I could try to order this abomination I created inspired by Ryan’s After School 1992 set and the retro Igloo cooler:

You know, they send a follow up email when you create a set and don’t order it. They want to know why you haven’t placed the order. For me, it’s 100% not knowing if the colors I choose will be to my liking when they arrive. I’m not sure how to fix that issue.

Will just sent out this link on the SPKeyboards discord. More cool stuff from SP. love it

Looks like Fredington decided to stick to mono yellow! Wooohoo! The original IC had a two tone yellow that looked unappealing to me. This looks like a great set.

I know we have a lot of light tactile fans and a lot of POM fans here. These do look interesting. 4mm travel too

Very interesting. The obvious comparison is with POM Browns.

I prefer nylon housings, but at least these are full-travel.

I couldn’t help myself, and in the interest of light-tactile development, have ordered some.

The KBDfans Margo got an update - new gaskets that hold the PCB, allowing for a plateless build:

Of course I’m going to try them on the Margo, but I got two extra sets to try also with the KBD67 v3 and KBD67 Lite, since all three keyboards were designed around the “mute silicone” mounting system that these gaskets replace. IIRC the Blade65 also used that mounting system, so if it works with the others it should work with those, too.

Alexotos did a build with these last week & they looked pretty promising! Definitely seemed to be an upgrade over the mute silicone mount to me & Alex seemed to agree. Let us know how they are once you get to try them! Being able to build it plateless makes the Margo infinitely more attractive to me, might grab one now this mount is out.

Man, that’s kinda cool and also a little bit frustrating lol – I have been building my own kbd67 lite clone with underglow to make use of the clear Margo case. Just managed to get PCBs back that fit the 9 screw hole standoffs for the plate and now they freaking release a way to do it without a plate!

(I originally got the Margo case for a kbd67 I have in a cheap plastic case, but realized far too late that the earlier KDB67 (with underglow; I think maybe it’s v2?) doesn’t work in the Margo case. Should have gotten an extra Tofu65 Acrylic case. Oh well.)

Get your Tiger Lite!

Now with HE options as well.

Says preorder but I don’t see an expected ship date. That purple is dreamy to me.

That seems like a competitive entry in the budget space. About $115 CAD shipped to-the-door.

I wonder how it compares with the Monsgeek M3 [currently $174 CAD] and the Classic-TKL [$160 CAD shipped].

Or even the Keychron V3 [fully assembled, knob, $130 CAD].

I own two tiger lite boards and 3 classic-tkl.

The tiger lite is a bit more generic looking in comparison to the Novelkeys offering, but it is a much more flexible board. With all foams included, both boards feel quite sturdy, but the classic-TKL feels more unique and premium with its large rubber base as custom “feet”

But if you wanted a Hall effect board that was affordable, easy to customize, and light for travel, the tiger lite is a great option

Mekibo has a good sale on. The discounts are on top of heavy reductions on several boards.

SA87 is down to like $100 with the stacked discount, etc.

I’ve looked into this a little.

The old Tiger Lite had a 1.2mm PCB, which must have contributed to its reputation for flex.

The new versions have a regular 1.6mm PCB. So I don’t know if it would flex more than something like a Classic-TKL.

KAM blanks and they’re glossy!

I usually order these things quickly, but I’ll try wait for a US vendor this time.

Here is my monthly wrap-up of community-favorite switches. While I’m still waiting for data from some vendors, the November top list already includes 14 shops, representing 1.2 million switches sold:

I don’t think they’re exactly the same, but Coffee Break has glossy KAM PBT blanks: KAM Blanks R2 (In Stock) | Coffee Break Keyboards. Not all the same colors, though.

Thanks for the link! I’m also a bit confused because I now remember talking about this previously and I possibly already pre-ordered?

I can’t seem to find a receipt anywhere so I bought a few sets.

I’ve been waiting for this.

It looks great so I’ll probably get it but some of my excitement has been tempered by how great I think SA History of Violets looks. Wish we could have MTNU History of Violets. I’ve been using MTNU graphite for a while now on an HHKB and it has resisted replacement. My only complaint about MTNU is the centered alpha legends which I’m just not a fan of in general now. Space Cadet does help with that for me.

Though I figure if this does well we can get MTNU Nuclear Data with its APL sublegend child set and maybe some others so I should buy it.

Bit of a ramble, sorry, I haven’t thought much about keycap sets lately.

I’d like that, but I’m not sure if I want to try to run more MTNU sets. Selectresque is kind of in limbo; my last big discussion with the vendor was back in September, when they told me to cut out 40’s support and most of the novelties to get it down as small as possible. I’ve checked back in a couple times since, asking for updates. Yesterday I wrote to see if they were still interested, and haven’t heard back yet. There’s been a lot of other sets announced in the interim, and Space Cadet is even a similar shade of blue. So I don’t know if Selectresque is still viable given all that.

You get a lot more creative freedom and working through SP, since they’re both manufacturer and lead vendor. And they’re always enthusiastic; they’ve never said no to any of my wacky ideas, and have even encouraged me to go bigger and add more kits and coverage. MTNU has been an entirely different ballgame, and I haven’t really enjoyed designing for it as much.
