[IC] MTNU Selectresque - An IBM Selectric-inspired blue doubleshot PBT set

Hi all, I’ve just launched an IC over on GeekHack for a new MTNU set inspired by the rare 1960’s IBM Selectric “NASA” colorway, MTNU Selectresque.

If any of you might be interested in a bright blue MTNU set with broad coverage for 40-100% boards (including HHKB 6u in the base), and fun text novelties drawn from classic Selectric typewriters, consider checking it out, and filling out the form there so I can present it to vendors. Thanks!

Thank you! I’ve been too scared to look at the GH reactions so far. I roamed off to work on something less stressful; reupholstering my sofa.

all positive there so far!

Oh thank God. I really tried to do my homework with this IC to head off all the usual complaints. Besides pricing, which there’s just no way to know without a vendor yet.

I’ll check it out once I get to a stopping point. I figure there’ll be multiple comments, and I want to give them all attentive replies when I’m not distracted.

Very nice! Been wanting a brightly colored MTNU set & this fits the bill perfectly! I love that you’re using some of the funkier legends from the Slectrics too, Mar Rel FTW! Now I want MTNU Space cadet LOL!

We all want it! And thank you!

What are the kitting requirements at GMK for MTNU?

Would it be possible to add a WoB mod optional set like @pixelpusher mentioned?

I have no idea! I haven’t designed for it before, and there’s only been a handful of sets released for it so far to study. None of them have had full second mod kits, but some have had accent kits with colored Escape, Return, arrows, and R4 mods.

All of them so far have had combined alphas and mods in one large base, either with or without a number pad as part of that. Some have also had an extras kit with minimal 40’s support and split bars in it. There seems to be a standardized “International” NorDeUK kit, similar to the one GMK designed for their CYL sets.

If it is possible to have different mix-and-match alpha and mod kits like SA sets often have, none of them have featured that yet. The trend for the most recent ones seems to be large monokits with no child kits at all.

I hope MTNU WoB/BoW become standard in-stock sets.

MTNU is still a nogo for me due to pricing (especially with sprue marks), but I really appreciate the 40s kitting. One of my biggest complaints yet.

I wonder if this could be titled the first colored MTNU set? Nice to see more than greyscale :eyes:

Yeah, pricing isn’t the best, but compared to Signature Plastics it’s reasonable. I started off with this as an SA set before realizing that there was no way it’d be affordable without stripping out a lot of support, and losing the Selectric legends that give it character.

MTNU 40’s support is still evolving; only a few molds exist so far, but I’m hoping they’ll flesh it out more. They are slowly introducing more keys - 6u space wasn’t there at launch, but is now, so I took advantage of that and tossed it in.

Big news - I’ve just been contacted by a well-known vendor (edit: it’s Prototypist) about making this happen. They’re going to announce it on a livestream tonight.

They do a lot of business with GMK, and should be in a position to help me with the color matching, sales, etc. to ensure this runs successfully. I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with them!

Just bought the Dolch MTNU set from Novelkeys but I would 100% buy this.

Thanks! It’s going to be a while, so folks can save up. It sounds like it’ll be a spring 2025 GB, just to avoid a glut of competing sets coming up this winter.

That timing works great for me! There’s a lot of MTNU out in the past month and my wallet is breaking.

I had no idea MoDo was coming, but I’m glad I’m not directly up against it! It sounds like there’s a lot in the pipeline between now and early next year, though I don’t know how much will be MTNU.

This set would pair very well with a silver anodized or white board.
I am not much into loud sets anymore but I will definitely consider, not owning any MTNU keycaps yet.

Nice work @Piperaceae !

Thanks! I’m hoping the end result won’t be too loud. We need to pin down a nice shade of blue that’s close to the original Selectric, and has good contrast with white legends, but isn’t difficult to match. Might go a little darker and wind up using XV4, one of GMK’s few stock PBT blues, but we’ll see.

Chuffed for this! I’m in!

One q: can the legend on the 1u key fit “ɪɴᴅᴇx” instead of just INDX? Even if just slightly smaller?
