I’ll check! I just guessed it wouldn’t fit, after looking at other 1u keys and seeing how many letters they have.
The font (Son of a Doubleshot) is kind of wide, so it’s hard to cram a lot of letters on there. Look at how Scroll Lock and Pause Break are treated, for example. Not sure if the kerning can be tweaked to do it; I’ve seen SA keys where the text is condensed (the 1.5u Restore key in SA Retro springs to mind.)
It’s coming! It’s just going to be a bit, because there’s a lot already in the pipeline ahead of this. We’re targeting a spring group buy. In the meantime, I sent in another kitting revision last Monday that I’m waiting for feedback on. So it’s moving, just slowly, given there’s no reason to rush.
After some consideration, I’ve decided not to move forward with the MTNU Selectresque group buy. The economics of MTNU are difficult to make work, and it’s been a learning experience.
To make the set viable, we were looking at having to strip out all 40’s and 6u coverage, alternate 65/75 column keys, most of the Selectric novelties, and possibly switch to a stock blue that didn’t match the Selectric well. An international kit was doubtful. In addition, Space Cadet just came out in a similar blue, which would have made the set an even harder sell.
I didn’t feel enthusiastic about the project given all that, and moving forward didn’t seem like the right thing to do.
Selectresque will return, however. I’ll be launching a new interest check in SA profile once my work on A History of Violets is complete.
I really hope I’m not being some petulant creative diva here. I just think that if I’m not excited by a design, it will show, and buyers won’t be excited by it either. I’d rather focus on projects that I feel more confident will make people happy.
Wow those changes do seem to strip a lot of character from the set. Makes sense to not move forward if you aren’t excited about it anymore - I agree the passion or lack of passion can show through!
Thank you. I also didn’t get the sense the vendor was feeling it; we last talked about it in September, and since then I’ve been checking in asking for feedback, and just hearing “we’ll get back to you.” I didn’t think it was going to run as scheduled anyway. Calling it off now means I can start work on revamping it, instead of waiting indefinitely.
I don’t think DSS is quite right for this, but I do like it, and have a DSS set designed and ready to go based on the Raytheon 6104. I pushed it back to do History of Violets, but want to launch an IC after that; before or after Selectresque.
It’s a real shame: I’ve read your reasons, I accept them but… I don’t agree with them. I think MTNU remains the best choice - and certainly not more expensive than SA. And frankly I don’t see any overlap with Space Cadet.
Part of it was also that the vendor just didn’t seem interested. I hadn’t heard any feedback since September when he said to cut it down significantly - it was going to be possibly the smallest MTNU set to run yet.
Once I did, I didn’t hear anything further. I messaged multiple times to ask about the status, and if I could do anything, and what the next steps were, and just got “I’ll get back to you.” Last week, after two months since the last “I’ll get back to you,” I finally asked if he was even still interested in it. I waited, and he still didn’t respond, and so that felt like my answer right there.
My decision to go with MTNU came relatively late in the design; I was almost going to make it in SA, and changed it maybe a week before launching the IC. I had two sets running with SP already that hadn’t come out yet, and wasn’t sure what their future was going to be. I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket.
But since the ownership change, they’ve implemented more standardized kitting, and partnered with overseas vendors; both of which have helped increase their MOQ, and bring prices down a bit. Their production queue is now something like 2.5 months. They’ve also been super responsive to my questions, often replying within minutes. That’s made working with them very easy compared to GMK and having to go through a vendor to talk to them.
