Hi, new to the ‘talk’ , and I looked/searched through the posts but didn’t see( may I missed it) where" we can get clear tops
Yes ‘MMswitch" is great in offering all those different parts to build switches but no “Clear Top Housing” which is today with all the new RGB PCBA coming up I think should be on the market, to build new clear top switches I used some old brown Gateron compatible with the ’ MMswitch Bottom Housing’ that I was using so I can mount on the Vortex model M that I was building.
Does anyone know “where” we can get/buy clear tops .? or scavenging other switches the only path.?
Glad to be part now of the KeebTalk community, and Thank you for any advice
I’m not any sort of expert on switch modding, and I’m not sure at all if these tops are compatible with your other switch parts, but Gazzew sells most of his switch parts as individual parts and I do know he sells clear tops. They’re about $0.25/top so it may be cheaper to just buy clear top Gaterons and sacrifice them.
@Deadeye is much more knowledgeable about this than I am.
There’s also a switch modding thread that has a ton of useful info and examples on every type of switch part going back several years:
I think Gazzew’s clear tops that @ListlessLlama mentioned are still the only ones available on their own - I did some testing and confirmed they should fit both Gateron and JWK (MMswitch) bottoms. They don’t fit with some other brands like TTC. Gazzew’s tops are are made by Outemu and will also fit other parts made by them.
There are two kinds of clear ones:
“No-slot” tops have tighter tolerances to reduce wobble, but are too tight for some stems - MMswitch ones seem to fit fine, though.
“With slot” tops have more relaxed tolerances and will fit a wider variety of stems at the cost of more wobble.
Looks like they are still available here:
It also looks like the no-slot tops have a new version in a different material but compatibility should be the same.
As mentioned they are a little pricy - down to 15 cents now at least - so if you can get your hands on some Gateron, JWK, Outemu, or other compatible clear tops either through the aftermarket, a generous benefactor like @Rob27shred, or just some discount whole switches - that might be the way to go.
