I see, yes. I think that if you go the split route you probably have to commit more to it.
Using more layers is definitely added and possibly unnecessary cognitive load.
Yeah, long-pole kind of ate everything, huh?
For example, the Blueberry Chiffon is a long-pole light/medium tactile, but I kind of think it would be a softer switch w/o it. The stem is fine, but the ‘benefits’ of the pole are loud noise and harsh bottom-out.
Gazzew or OUTEMU could probably easily create a light/medium tactile by putting a Blueberry Chiffon stem into a Bobagum housing, but they haven’t yet. [Pole or sans-pole]
I heard that the Durock T1s are getting looser. Not sure what options there are at that point - maybe just buy some older SP Star purples. But they would probably all benefit from filming. At least you bought the Smokey T1, which had a tight housing several years back.
I found the layout of the Iris to be much more friendly to less-than-daily use, more so than my Planck and Preonic. It’s usually about 15 minutes of typos and then I’m close to my usual typing speed. Not having to worry about an extra layer or memorizing positions for numbers/punctuation row really helps.
Well, I tried Iris also and it didn’t pan out. Like you get up drowsy at noon like today and find that your team has been in firefighting mode bc of a bug so you dive in…with an ortho board. 15-min of typos is not going to fly, at least with me.
Yeah it’s kind of a shame that short poles aren’t really in made in new switches anymore. I really hoped the Blue Lotus would be enough but with that kind of tactility every little bit of travel helps, and in practice the usable travel was more like 3.6mm if you weren’t trying to smash the stem into the housing.
I have some smokey T1s I got from Omegakeys in 2021 so I can always compare those in terms of housing wobbles. But in the end I plan on using Deskeys films so wobble isn’t a huge deal.
Thanks. It would be interesting to know about the wobble. I saw a big thread where a guy was complaining that his 6-month-old Durocks had died on him!
It came out in various threads that Durock QC has gone down. The name is still there, but they aren’t trying as hard in a number of their switch lines. There’s greater wobble, and even a high failure rate in some lines.
Anyway, the guy with the dead Durocks, he was advised to switch to U4T. (The only other switch I’ve heard of dying so quickly was the AKKO CS Ocean Blue and Purple, as it later turned out. Makes me wonder about their cheap Cream Blue “Pro” switches.)
…Speaking of which - 2022-2023 is like the year of the ‘slam tactile’
You got the Blueberry Chiffon ‘light’ tactile, which has a LP bottom-out (even though it’s not harsh by LP standards). The new V2 is the same. The latest Naevies are said to be long-pole. Aflion ‘Runner’ is said to be a big bump. And the new AKKO Cream Blue Pro V3 is like one big bump and then bottom-out. Almost like Zealio V2 made a comeback, even if these are smaller and smoother.
I’d like to see people improve on Cherry-style bumps rather than completely reject them. At least the new Revo Chazhu “vint browns that aren’t” are said to be Brown-style with at least 3.7mm of travel.
Thanks for the welcome!
When I was lurking this forum for info, I did see some of your posts about HPE switches, like the DK Onis, and the Blue Skies. It helped convince me to just give the Honeydews a try.
I probably will end up ordering an Envoy this week. It’s within my budget, and I shouldn’t have to wait too long for it to arrive.
Tried this the other day - it’s quite nice. Needs the clear-with-slot tops with slightly relaxed (but still tighter than normal Outemu) tolerances.
This irks me so bad, because I passed up the chance to buy V1 Bluebery Chiffons at dirt cheap prices!
Imagine, I could have bought them at like 20 cents each, and just shoved the lubed stems and springs into Bobagum housings! Easiest tactile ever!
Well - I did get a bunch of those V1 Chiffons - I could spare a set at-cost plus shipping if you still want them. If all you want is the stems I could ship a bag of those nice and cheap.
Hey, that would be amazing! Let’s set that up. I’ll PM you.
Interesting. Luckily I have the parts to try this later.
Ordering PC parts soon because my trusty, old desktop has booted its final boot. RIP old friend.
@ListlessLlama A CR2032 lithium button cell may be all you need ordering for replacing the one on the motherboard…
Man… just look at that! Gorgeous. Definitely thought about ordering Vior today - it’s already out of stock, though.
I still think I prefer Phantom… but this gives it a run for its money. Even the storage case looks cool! Yep. This one’s on my list.
That was my first thought as well, but unfortunately I think it’s a more serious issue. Swapped out the battery but still unable to even get into the bios. Tower powers on, one of the fans spins up, and… nothing. Left the battery out for like 15 minutes to force a reset… still nothing. Tried disconnecting the SSDs to force it to go to bios and still nothing. Tried using the mobo’s HDMI in case the GPU failed… and still nothing. My guess is it’s either the motherboard (or maybe just the important bits of the motherboard, since some LEDs still work), the processor, or both.
It’s more annoying than devastating. I built it in 2015 so it was time for an upgrade; also, I’m good with backups and I’m pretty sure the SSDs are ok, so shouldn’t have any serious data loss.
Ordered some Zaku IIs. Kinda bought into the hype here but I’ve been running basically the same tactiles for the past few years (Polia stems in Boba) so I wanted to try something new.
Ha. I just came here to post the same thing on this thread. I love the look. But I just can’t do it! I can’t buy from KBDFans anymore. Since my return that went afoul, the only thing I’ve purchased was one set of keycaps.
I’d truly rather support small projects and independent designers. But man, I’m really tempted with this one. Also with the cookies n cream keycaps.
I’ll live to hold out yet another day, but this is a nice looking product.
I want to say that you can also order Cookies 'n Cream from Divinikey, but they are blocked from my work PC, unfortunately…
looks like you can pre-order it there. I still hate to buy them just because it’s supporting KBDFans.
