I got some silver PVD accent weights for my Gentoo. I had wanted to buy them for months but I wasn’t going to pay the insane price. 50% off was enough to entice me. Still expensive, but I think they’re worth it. The sandblasted weights were just too yellow to go with most keycap sets. Silver works a lot better
The mystery caps I ordered in the CannonKeys sale last week arrived:
Pelô isn’t really my style with the fancy mods (I gravitate to more minimalist designs) but the set comes with some standard mods with bright colors and overall quality is quite nice, especially so at $20 for the set.
CK also tossed in a Seal Minterly Linear sample, which gave me a chuckle since that was the very first linear switch I ever purchased back in August 2021.
Ha. I got one too. I was like… ooh, is this a new switch? Then I noticed how much the top rattled. Nope. Good old JWK
Featuring the POK top case and stem, Akko Dracula switch is designed to be ultra-smooth and comfortable to type on.
This marks Akko’s first venture into using POK material, known for its superior water and impact resistance compared to POM. While POK may slightly change color over time, we’ve thoughtfully chosen black and dark red shades to enhance durability and aesthetics.
There is grease but they are dry))
That’s why the pitch sound is high, on any caps.
You need to lubricate everything manually.
Very light. Too much for me.
Completely made of POK. That’s why they are very smooth.
Slippery as soap) Very easy to insert into the plate, very easy to put on the keycap.
More resin, finally got a Tut from Alpha!
Edit: Also got a cap in from MFC today, it’s a 9009 Recluse! Really cute cap, love the way the little guy is using a cap for its shell!
Akko Rosewood from Milktooth came in.
Stock sound is similar to Vertex V1 and JWICK Blacks, both using PA66. Rosewood uses PA6: softer material with more dampening.
- full key travel and very smooth stock.
- spring feels nice. snappy and bouncy. no spring ping.
- a bit of crap sound on upstroke (from snappy spring?).
Going to try relubing a few with 205g0 to find out how PA6 behaves like PA66.
UPDATE: Opened one of the switches to try 205g0 and found this interesting switch design twist, presumably to reduce leaf ping?
After relubing with 205g0, pitch didn’t change but feels smoother with less irregularities and crap sound. There was also a touch of chalky feel in the stock switch that I didn’t notice until tested next to one lubed with 205g0.
Their sound may be too low pitched for some boards. Vertex V1 lubed with 205g0 is thocky. Rosewood is rumbly. It’s very muted on some boards I tried. Not deadened as the sound is interesting. Tempted to try long pole stems.
UPDATE2: Rosewood stem fits keycaps pretty tightly. Not as tight as Cherry MX Clear stems but tight enough to noteable.
UPDATE3: Tried many long pole stems and only BSUN/HC Studio Roselle stem would barely fit without locking. Oh well.
CK got the PBS set out the door pretty quickly and I put it on the ol’ stem-swapped HHKB2 today. It feels pretty great, tbh, though it’s a lot lower than the GMK CYL set I had been using. I don’t know how long I’ll keep it on there, I’ve been really wanting to get that MTNU blanks set from NK_ but hoping it will go on sale soon.
PBS is, in my personal experience, much better feeling than DSA. Also, it’s nice to support public television.
It’s such a beautiful set…and everyone remarks on it - the only one of my keycap sets that seems to draw the eye.
I also just received my PBS set today. Blank white.
As you know, I am a pretty big fan of uniform profile keycaps. I do like DSA a lot. The only issue I’ve ever had with DSA is that they sit a bit high on the switch and that leads to a less than stellar sound profile.
My 1 hour of experience with PBS comes with these thoughts.
Texture: Texture is very smooth, silky smooth. You feel like you need to rub your fingers after typing because it feels like some silk dust is on them. It’s a nice texture for PBT, but I do prefer the slightly rougher texture of DSA PBT to PBS. I’m personally a fan of the feel of ABS. I know… I’m a weirdo.
Sound: Sound is much improved over DSA. The cap sitting lower and being thicker helps to resonate a lot of the impact sound up underneath the cap. This is in contrast to DSA that does nothing to amplify or enhance typing sounds.
Height: This is where the profile has the hugest difference. PBS sits so much lower than DSA. the bottom of the cap even sits slightly lower than GMK. This is similar to MT3, and a feature I really enjoy with both profiles.
Dish: It feels scoopy like MT3. It’s comfortable. But I do feel like it traps my fingers in to an extent. So I hate to say it, but I prefer the dish of uniform SA over this. It’s just a bit too scoopy for my taste. But I surmise that some people will find it a very attractive feature.
Quality: At the moment, they are only blanks, so we don’t get the full picture, but 1:1 with a DSA blank from SP, these are top notch contenders. Thicker, no warping, hidden sprue marks, straight stems. Stellar execution in manufacturing.
I’m still too much of a fanboy to put these over DSA, but they are very nice. I prefer the thin and crispy typing expereince on DSA where I feel like my fingers can glide with ease.
I do enjoy the set enough to be picking up any sets that have interesting colorways for sure.
Last thoughts: I really wish they would revisit the texture on these. It needs to have a slight bit of texture. They’re too smooth. Also, for my personal taste, the dish could be a touch less scooped. I would be willing to crown these the best ever uniform profile keycaps if those two things could happen. Again, I can’t speak on the quality of legends since they are blanks.
I’m currently trying on some other boards with different inclines and non-linear switches. They do feel a bit more comfortable on a lower angle board.
I think modding keycap texture should be part of this hobby although I have not yet tried making texture rougher yet.
Fine-tuning keycap texture and switch spring weight to my taste really enhanced typing experience for me.
I forgot to mention another good thing about the way PBS is designed. There are shallow supports underneath the cap to add structure, but they’re done in a way that keeps it from coming into contact with upside down switches (south facing) and also my TTC Neptunes. So if you have any boards that you are forced to use DSA caps on for these issues, PBS will work as well. And they’re 1.5mm thick. Impressive design.
This build makes me think of Future Funk and Synthwave; the TX logo even makes me think of a tape deck.
I don’t know you well enough to confirm your level of weirdo-ness, but I couldn’t agree more with your take on keycap texture. I would almost always pick ABS over PBT, and I love DSA’s implementation. Even comparing profiles made in both materials like KAT, the ABS sets trump the PBT ones in my eyes. Furthermore, the silky smooth PBT sets that I own live in my drawer pretty much full time (ePBT for instance). As much as I love CRP, my XMI sets see much more use.
Acronym rant over.
I wouldn’t call you guys weird as I too prefer the feel of ABS over PBT, although maybe that just means all three of us are weirdos… However I don’t mind smoothish PBT myself (needs to be some texture IMO though). I really enjoy the texture of CRP & MTNU. As for new ePBT those sets probably see the least use from me out of all the PBT sets I own if I’m being honest (maybe my Infinikey sets see a little bit less use). They’re just such a let down compared to the 3 OG ePBT sets I got that used Gateron blanks.
Oh look, it’s a neighborhood weirdo roundup!
Honestly, considering the popularity of GMK (excluding MTNU), I’d say ABS fans are in the majority.
Yeah, with all the GMK fans and owners, I would say there are more ABS fans (or you call weirdos
) than PBT
I enjoyed this write up by @Deadeye on ABS vs. PBT:
