Light Switches

Conversely, I might argue that anything under 50g is not a switch. It’s just a proximity sensor.

For regular cherry length springs, I personally would consider anything under 65g to be light, lol. A few years ago the meta was 67g, but with the recent influx of budget switch options (ktt, HMX, etc) the spring weights have tanked for some reason (I know in many instances the spring lengths have dramatically increased). I wonder if it’s what the “western” market was looking for, or just an “eastern” market’s preference, and they got gobbled up in the West due to the value proposition.

Honestly I think it was the convergence of the usual heavy clicky or tactile to light linear journey that a lot of enthusiasts end up taking with the HMX releasing their switches at the perfect time. If you think about it those who got into the hobby during covid & really got sucked into it like us are right now most likely really figuring out their true preferences (I know it took me quite a few years to realize light linears were the best for me) & HMX just so happened to be the new hotness in light linears the past year give or take. Also I will say the longer springs do make lower weights much more approachable to many. The OG 14mm springs definitely get a lot wimpier feeling below 60g to 50g IME, while with 16mm & 18mm springs especially I find myself able to comfortably dip as low as 40g.

However I think we’ve as a whole have appreciated long springs for much longer than we realize. Look at Gat yellow springs, despite them being some of the most inconsistently weighted springs I have ever tried they were praised big time around 4 to 6 yrs ago. I never realized why till longer springs really started to catch on & then one day when I was modding a batch of milky top yellows I happened to notice the spring was slightly longer than any other stock Cherry or Gateron spring. Which finally made it click that the extra length was the reason so many liked them despite them having a variance allowance of close to 10gs!

My ‘weight’ went down into 40s but now bounced back into 58~60g range and rising. Light switches were delightful to type on but got addicted to snug feel that heavier springs add. 62.5g is likely the max for me though. That’s around where I was before the ‘light’ phase.

Wonder what the force-curve looks like on that one

I drew one in MS Paint, but it wasn’t as funny as I thought. The manufacturers probably have them somewhere, now that I think about it.
