Hey everyone, I found an amazing set of keycaps at this place called gmkkeycaps.com. I know GMK keycaps are top of the line in general, but never seen this website. And just wondering if they are a good legitimate company?
Then I also need to find out what all comes in this set they are selling. They literally almost never show a full shot of all the keycaps that come in the set?! Just 2-4 photos of the keycaps on a keyboard. Which is crazy!
It says its a 146 cap set, but again, their photos only show a TKL board and that’s only 87 keys. What are the other 59 keys?! And what do they look like? I don’t know, they don’t show them?! I messaged them early yesterday morning and still no reply.
If you want that specific keycap set you can definitely find those on Amazon or aliexpress for MUCH cheaper because I have 100% seen them there before. You can try searching for something like “ASA Black and white keycaps” or “ASA Translucent Black and White Keycaps”.
EDIT: I found them for you here if you want to take a look, Amazon.com
Darn it. That sucks they’re a scam. They’re the first website I’ve seen a half size SA WOB keycap set! Or HSA. It’s right up my alley. Looks like SA, but is aprox half the height. SO cool.
I’ll just stick with the CXA Cannonkeycaps set or the Maxkey Calm Depths SA set I found already:
Yea I really wish that site would be taken down or at the very least name changed. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet but I am just guessing it is because they do actually partially ship products out granted the items they do ship properly are probably just their overpriced cheap keycaps and/or clones.
I just threw some of those on a board recently. They’re nice, but they are indeed about twenty bucks worth of nice.
They will often be called just SA, and when they were new back in the day, I think"QX SA" was settled on to differentiate them from the similar but slightly upmarket “AF SA”. ASA is (likely among other things) another similar profile sold by Akko/Monsgeek. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if searching for it can get you to the cheap “Emoji SA” sets.
Just keep coming around. The combination of byzantine supply chains, esoteric jargon and the “diminishing returns” concept inherent to higher-end offerings in many hobbies means there’s always some weirdness afoot. Part of the fun is leveraging our knowledge for good.
As @Wooden-Toilet said, that set is available elsewhere for much cheaper, as is almost everything you might find on that site. They’re not even necessarily “bad” keycaps at all; the scam is in the misleading branding and the pricing of what should be commodity sets.
More broadly, spherical, sculpted profiles with centered legends are available at various heights and most price points.
