Had this idea a few years ago (and I’m sure I’m not the only one) - looks like someone tested a prototype and decided to do an IC. This one’s too expensive for me, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Geon take a whack at it.
Also, SwitchOddities has a whole buncha new samples in their catalog, including those kooky ball-bearing ones. Check it out!
Maybe unnecessary to buy this and instead just use two pieces of aluminum clamped together (maybe even with just rubber bands). The creator suggest that it is all that they’ve tested so far (as the actual prototype is still on the way):
To test this, like I mentioned in a reply below I just took a spacebar, put it between 2 aluminum plates and clamped it down. Then dunked it in water and it came out perfectly. This is doing the same as using a blow dryer its just more convenient and controllable/repeatable. I will post a video/photo album of the prototype working as soon as it arrives. Me and Bowl rush-ordered it today.
The keep the two plates aligned, one could just wedge a piece of rubber/foam at each corner.
Although, one thing to be careful about is to not exert too much force on the two plates, as one might possibly flatten the entire spacebar into a pancake.
It always surprises me how many custom builds are winkeyless. If you are any kind of heavy user, that key is essential on both Mac and PC. Is the custom scene dominated by Linux users?
I use it heavily, can’t imagine not having quick access to the winkey shortcuts for rearranging windows, since that’s 50 times faster than messing with the mouse.
Not only is this gorgeous colorway available once again - but it now also features an optional R5 kit, a sleek set of redesigned novelties, and a dazzling artisan by Hibi.
You can still map the Win key to other less used key like caps lock (in a QMK layer or not).
People often map it to left Ctrl and left Ctrl to caps lock.
I think at least some of the WKL crowd are gamers, for who bottom-left ctrl is super important, but the win key can cause a a loss if the game fails to suppress it.
If people are concerned about accidentally hitting the win key, they could always remap it to something else. Personally, I have caps lock remapped as control, making it easier to reach.
I mainly use Linux, but I find myself using the win key (or rather the “super” key) quite often. It’s a convenient way to open the application menu (something similar to the start menu), where I can just start typing the name of a program that I want to launch, maybe use arrow keys to select from the autocomplete list, and then hit enter to launch it.
I wonder about the perspective of those among you that mainly use Windows. Do you use the start menu often or infrequently? Do you prefer to click on it, rather than just staying on the keyboard?
Of course not having it doesn’t stop the show because it can be mapped onto a different key, but it happens to be a useful primary key - the left one, anyway - and if you were wiping off random keys there are others that most people would find less useful, like the backslash/pipe key.
That’s true, but nearly every gaming board and every QMK board allows you to lock out the Win key for the duration of a gaming session.
