I started watching that second “Life Talks” episode last night on Youtube.
I’ll give it a few days to see if choobies has this Heavy Grail Life Talk or wants to get it from you and put it on his Youtube Channel. If not maybe I can take you up on getting that file somehow!
Hey @topre_user! I’m always happy to see such an interest in my favorite keyboard person, @norbauer
I’ve uploaded the VOD straight from Twitch to Youtube, but I definitely haven’t proofed it for any weird things, so… feel free to tell me if there are any weird bits in it. Please enjoy! And do share some podcast/discussion ideas for future Choobies/Norbauer interactions, because I think both he and I could do with the nudge.
By way of a little update, I recently gave final approval on the switch plates to go to production after some final tweaks to the molds and injection pressure/temperature settings. Production on those should take only a couple of weeks.
I’ve also gotten and approved pre-production samples of both steel and aluminum Pro 3 housings and those are currently making their way through the (slow) 5-axis milling process. So far all the steel Pro 3s are complete and they’re making the aluminum ones now. Pro 2 comes after that.
Gaskets and spacebar bumpers are complete and in hand, along with the acoustic dampeners.
Yes, I wasn’t originally planning on it but then figured why not. They don’t seem to be particularly significant based on my tests but surely it can’t hurt to get as close as possible to the original plate.
Do we know for sure whether the Pro 2 chassis will have sufficient room for a battery for use with aftermarket BLE controllers, given the sound dampening material in the case?
No, the stainless housings take a considerable amount of time to finish after machining since they’re all polished by hand here in Los Angeles, so I still expect these to be ready with everything else sometime this summer.
Thank you so much for this, Ryan, and to madphoenix for raising the topic. This is super useful.
I just put in an order for a Heavy Grail and intend to use the Yang BLE controller for it - bit of a Hail Mary strategy in terms of the battery but I could not miss out on the extra pre-order slots. It looks like you could fit a thinner and longer battery to the left of the breakout PCB if you compromise a few mAh. This matches my rough conclusions from sleuthing around on the existing stream recordings where the Heavy Grail prototype was disassembled. Thrilled.
Will the PCB attach to your plate with 17 screws like in the stock case? If so, will the threading for the screws be in the plastic? Will you include spare screws in case we lose one?
I think you planned on making a build video at some point. When do you think you’ll have time to make one? I’d love to see the assembly process from start to finish.
You’ll need to use the same self-threading screws for plastic that come with the HHKB for attach the HHKB PCB to the Heavy Grail plate, so don’t lose them or throw them away. If for some reason anybody misplaces one, I’m sure I can figure out the specs so you can order replacements.
I do plan to make a build video for each type, but not for another month or two at least, as I’m still waiting on the final version of the rear cover plate and want to demo the build using that. (I made a last-minute improvement that uses built-in standoffs like on the Heavy-6, reducing the amount of loose fastening breakout PCB hardware required in the kit from 8 pieces to only two.)
Thanks Ryan, appreciate this insight, @madphoenix thanks for raising it. @batonnoir I’m planning on doing this same thing, already have the Yang BLE controller in hand. If anyone finds a good battery option, please post here. I’m struggling to find something that will likely fit.
