Coffee in a foam cup with a plastic lid

I rarely ever buy coffee from a store, but man I am completely incapable of drinking from one of those disposable cups without spilling some. I usually take the lid off to let it cool down then put it back on to drink from (or better yet, pour the coffee into a real mug).

Honestly though, in general I’m not a huge fan of coffee. I take Adderall in the morning, extra stimulants just make me jittery and agitated.

I’m a fan of all coffee. I love a crap cup of coffee just as I love the best pour over.

Mate gives the same amount of energy as a cup of coffee, without the jittery feeling that some people get from caffeine. The LA Times proposes that it’s because one cup of yerba mate contains 80 milligrams of caffeine, which is twice as much as black tea but significantly less than a cup of coffee.

Makes sense to take lid off because many elements of the brewed coffee’s taste don’t come out until its a cooler temperature.
I have really enjoyed this re-usable cup:

has the aesthetic of a to-go cup but is infinitely re-usable and does not soak up flavors. It also keeps coffee generally warm for a while but not boiling hot for like 5 hours like most insulated containers.

Neat! I heard about this. This must be why the fancy pants coffee shop down the street from me offers metal and ceramic straws to it’s mustached patrons. I’ll need to pick one up, I might have been missing out.

I spent a couple of years as a barista. We were told to make sure we always did our coffee tastings with the lid off because otherwise the whole flavor of the coffee doesn’t come through and we wouldn’t get the full experience. Also plastic cups were a no no as they pretty heavily altered the flavor of whatever we were brewing.

Granted this was Starbucks, so take this with a grain of salt lol.

To be fair, to achieve a level of consistency (even if its mediocre consistency) across so many locations is actually somewhat impressive

obvi not applicable at starbucks bc as far as i know they were fully paper or plastic cups only, but in non-chain shops with ceramic or glass available, i still don’t know why patrons would default to the disposable cup choice when they were going to sit in the patio or inside and drink their full drink at the shop.

As long as we’re on the slight, innocuous tangent of non-disposable cups, I have to say the Ember mug is quite wonderful for all the slow sippers and no lidders out here. There’s a certain magic in keeping your coffee at your perfect temperature for the duration of the drink.

My advice is to do it in a french press with the water heated somewhere between 160°-170° to start. If you want to go deep you can get the gourd and thermos involved.

I’m solidly in the lid-off camp. I, too, generally decline the lid and ask for room. They may be compostable, but even still.
