I agree. And this lead me to a cool look on my Argyle with the remaining caps. Nice to be able to cover 2 boards with one set.
I wonder if removing the plate stand-offs will make it more flexible?
Perhaps. I’ll give it a try when the Ironstone shows up
I’d be very curious if you do, and if it does, lol. I haven’t built mine yet.

Great pictures. I’m happy if I manage to keep dog hair out of mine.
I really do love that light gray. I may pick up an extra top in that color should they offer them a la carte like they teased. I know they were going for the Realforce R1 look with the red letters in the badge, but I wish the black version had this monotone badge.
Saturday hack job… In the end, hot glue worked. Maybe I just couldn’t resist a good excuse to get a 3D pen. lol
UPDATE: It’s messy for sure but also removable. Well, more like scrapable but minor detail.
Whatcha building?
Not sure yet. It’s a cheap TKL I got (CSM something) which sounds surprisingly nice but don’t support VIA.
So far I replaced the daughter board from CannonKeys which should support both H87A and Bastion TKL PCBs (connectors differ). Case and its stock PCB plate also appears to be compatible with F12 version of both.
I’m not mentally prepared to desoldering my H87A board so I’m going to get a hot-swap F12 Bastion TKL PCB (which, as usual, is out of stock atm).
I have heard that 91% isopropyl alcohol will help make hot glue release from whatever it’s stuck to.
I’ve a big jug of the stuff so I guess I’m good.
Working out a layout for the Totem I am going to build.
I’ve flashed my Ergodox EZ with the layout I plan on using, and I’m already getting used to a 38 key layout. So far, I’ve noticed a big drop in hand and wrist pain because of the reduced stretching for keys. Home row mods are actually a lot nicer to use than I thought they’d be. One day with them, and I find I’m starting to prefer them.
Mailday, got some PCBs today. Including my first ever Keyboard design, I love it. Really have to finish the case now. There seems to be an issue with the stepped Capslock footprint however, need to check whats going on there. Firmware for now is KMK built with the awesome POG, QMK coming later.
Perfect to use up extra caps! Love it! POG is super nice, and the only persistent issue I have with KMK is that I don’t know how to easily get my computer to recognize it from sleep or before the BIOS loads. I guess it’s also a bit annoying to muck about in KMK with two CIrcuitPython drives attached at the same time, but that’s rare enough not to be any major annoyance.
For the CapsLock, the “real” stepped keycap centers the stem on the raised portion, so it’s more like a 1.25u with a blocker. Some sets include a third “pseudo stepped” capslock that reduces the step enough to use the normal stem location. Seems like you may have one of the latter?
For the BIOS/Sleep thing there is afaik a workaround for KMK, I almost tested that last year when QMK was still lacking in RP2040 support. At least thats what I thought, I cant really find it anymore in the current documentation (which seems a lot worse than last time I used it). I think it had something to do with the hidden USB storage unless Key X is pressed/held at boot. But Im not sure anymore as I cant find the docs for that.
Regarding the stepped Capslock, your idea got me in the right direction. Yes the stem is not correctly placed for a stepped footprint, however, its not placed correctly at all. Checkend with a bunch of other Keycap sets I have here, and even my other Aliexpress kits fit just fine. Only this one does not.
Top to bottom:
- regular Aliexpress Capslock
- stepped Capslock that fits
- stepped capslock from the first picture
So, no issue with the footprint and I dont need to order another fixed batch. Time to get the case fixed then, I guess.
Looks like they let the website go, and everything is on the Github or Zulip now, but I’ll take a peek, or maybe see if the POG guy makes it a toggle someday. I suppose at some point I’ll actually learn enough QMK to get my boards on it, but as long as I have a Mouse and a backup keyboard (or ten) floating around somewhere, it’s been a low priority.
Weird about the keycap, but glad the PCB is okay!
This often happens the first time you design a board.
I did the same mistake as you on one of my first designs
It sucks, but hey, use regular caps lock and you will be good to go
Well the PCB is fine, very satisfied with my choice of footprints
Trying a full board of HMX Snow Crash again. This time I used a more roomy case and the bottomout sound is now pleasant in a shy way. A bit of ploppy wetness still but no longer irritating. Its feel is still touchy-feely and creamy smooth in a dry way (not quite chalky but powdery).
