Easing Into Linears

opinions on the marshmallow switches? They sound pretty deep.

Yup. Marshmallows sound real deep after lubing. I like them a lot.

What I also should’ve mentioned re Marshmallow. It doesn’t need filming. Very little wobble and housing just snaps real tight which I suspect is why it sounds much better than other JWK made switches.

so we can all be very excited about the konpeitou switches, which will use the marshmallow housing (except modified bottom housing) and a longer stem.

I think extended stem will make the switch sound sharper, like Holy Panda, meaning more clack than thock.

Let’s see, it doesn’t necessarily have to be, since the bottom housing was specially adapted. You can hear a comparison in the audio recording:

Marshmallow first (phone recording and stock). It’s from thic thock discord, credit to @reeeyouuu.

Konpeitou does sound noticeably lower pitched. Interesting.

I think that lubing linear switches have changed my look on them, buttery smooth has a whole new appeal after you try it for the first time. My kiwi switches may not see a lot of use now lol

Honestly most people seem to end up going linear after being in this hobby for awhile. I started off using exclusively heavy tactile switches, then slowly but surely transitioned over to light linears. Well at least with MX switches. The fact that I highly prefer the tactility of SKCM ALPS & Topre helped with that a good bit too.

Yeah. While my interest in tactiles and clickies are near zero now, I’m still interested in SKCM Orange.

I’d say they’re well worth a shot! While of course my preferences are gonna be different from yours, I really believe the difference in feel between MX tactiles & SKCM ALPS tactiles is big enough to justify trying them even if you’re not a fan of tactiles!

I would still love to have a board with SKCM Blues… Currently waiting on silencing rings for my Realforce, so I can start using it again. Also waiting on “The Build” parts.

Yup, linears and Topre is all you need

yeah. ALPS feels more mechanical than MX. More chicky-chunk feel and sound like.

wait…hold my holy bobas

Jokes aside: I like Linears. But nowadays all Linears feel extremely smooth and there are hardly any differences (maybe minimal in sound).

I used to spend a lot of money on Tealios to have a smooth switch. Today, every JWK clone brings the same to the table. With tactical switches there is still minimal variety, such as the new pewter switch (better brown) - even if it is almost only the ultra tactical holy panda clone.

To me, variation in sound is very wide. And, given a switch, finding the right combo of other factors using trial and error to make the best sounding board can cost a lot of money. This is why ‘great sounding’ switches are cherrished (pun intended). They usually sound great in any combo.

You can buy the housings by themselves from u/hbheroinbob on reddit aka gazzew.

He really has, but I have one big complaint about his products. His tolerances are so tight that you can’t use a majority of other switch parts with them. Although that can be a good or bad thing depending on what you want. If he’d make some plain old linear stems for the Boba housings I’d be more than happy to drop that compliant.

Finally got around to counting NK Dry Yellow switches with broken legs: 13 switches. Still not sure why they broke. Maybe plastic mix had low tensile strength which switch film exasperated. Just don’t know.

I’m going to either find an alternate top housings or replant the stem elsewhere.
