Easing Into Linears

I didn’t have any issues with them like the v1 inks, but tbh I didn’t pay that much attention when putting together. I did lube and film them fwiw

with tx films? I heard zeal switches are tight with tx films

they are a bit tight, but nothing crazy, it works fine. I have I think five keyboards with lubed and filmed tealios at this point, when I was doing the first one or two it helped to double check that the switches were closed all the way before trying to put them into the plate/pcb, but after doing it a few times I’ve gotten pretty good at closing them right the first time.

alright, very interesting thanks! You probably don’t know if the kebo films (a bit softer) would fit maybe a bit better?

Yeah, I don’t, sorry. I got a shitton of the TX ones at some point so I wouldn’t have to worry about having enough on hand

I thought the same way when I started using C3 Tangerine V2s. Coming from Zealios v1 78g, I just didn’t enjoy typing on them, at least at first. It’s been a couple of weeks and I’ve gotten used to them for the most part. I’m thinking that I didn’t enjoy them as much was, in part, due to the Tangerines being on DSA keycaps.

Oop. Didn’t see this was an old post

No problem. This thread is intended to be an everlasting gateway to linear heaven.

Speaking of an everlasting gateway to linear heaven , I finally gave Creams a proper go & have been quite surprised by them TBH! Yes they are scratchy, much less so with lube, but scratchy until properly broken in nonetheless. Although with a healthy dose of 205g0, they become more than smooth enough to not only use but also enjoy. I ended up putting some of the ones I have into my Mahjong,

which has them on a sandwich mounted brass plate. For modding I lubed them liberally with 205g0, swapped the springs for 63.5g standard springs lubed with 105, & filmed them with Kebo films (Kebo are the only films that will let creams close with them AFAIK).

Now the Mahjong is a rather stiff typing board thanks to the full brass plate, but the creams really seem to go well in this type of setup. I’ve really been digging them for the last few days. The sound is great, I now see why everyone raves about Cream’s sound. The feel is great to with the lighter springs, the tolerances are very tight with the ones I got, basically no wobble. Once these guys get properly broken in I think I might have really compare them to my prefered JWK/Durock linears.

Great idea! I wondered what eventually would be noteworthy alternatives for the coveted vintage blacks once supply is eventually depleted. JWK/Durock look to be decent contenders.

JWK/Durock linears are for sure top dog in currently produced linear switches IMHO. They do need lubed & filmed to reach full potential, but since most of us do that anyways. They even have a deeper sound signature than most linears, not quite Cream or black housing cherry’s but closer than anything else IMHO (Tangies being the higher pitched outlier). I would say to grab a batch at retail next time you can to try them, if you don’t like them you can definitely get your money back on them.

Roger that. Done. Much appreciated!

It’s a great combination. I REALLY wish I had known about CRP Desko when the GB happened [in Canada, no less.] I have two polycarb kits, so Desko would be great.

At least I have a CRP in GB.

Yup. CRP Desko is the best keyset I have. EnjoyPBT and GMK are nice but feels flimsy next to CRP. It’s not clear why though. Slightly thicker walls or perhaps the PBT mix they’re using? The difference is almost as noticeable as SP made SA keycap versus other SA keycaps.

I wish they’d add some more modern keysets to the line beyond the weird classics they have. I’d jump on CRP Modern Dolch Light or CRP 2048.

I didn’t know what difference in switch housing tolerance sounded like until I compared the sound of Mauve and NK Dry Yellow switches (both lubed w/205g0 and filmed w/TX).

Mauve is a very smooth switch. My only complaint with it is the sound. What sounded rattly stock turned into hollow plungy sound after lubing and filming. But the dirty noise wasn’t severe so easily ignorable while working.

NK Dry Yellow is just as smooth but with little or no wobble. Without the annoying noise, it sounds clean and solid. Key travel seems shorter than Mauve but I’m not sure if I’m just imagining it or not. Other than that, it’s a far better than switch than Mauve.

I finally got around to lubing, spring swapping, & filming a few of my NK Dry Yellows to see how they feel loose & in a HS board (spirit 63.5g progressive springs, 205g0 on housings/sliders, 105 on springs, & Deskey films). Overall I’m very impressed by them with a few tests loose & few tests with a couple in a HS board. Definitely a JWK linear through & through, but with the tightened housing tolerances I agree that gives Dry/Silk series switches the extra edge over previous JWK linears.

As for these Dry Yellows, definitely a very smooth, nice feeling & sounding switch IMO. The sound is a bit high pitched though which surprised me a little. I only have Alpacas & Tangies on hand to compare these too other JWK switches. While they honestly all sound & feel virtually identical tuned the same way, these Dry Yellows tend to remind me more of the Tangies than the Alpacas TBH. A tiny bit smoother with a tiny bit higher pitched sound. All in all I think I’m gonna really like these switches when I get them in a build & would recommend them already (Drys or Silks) just from the limited testing I did so far. :+1: :ok_hand:

what is the best switch that is in stock that is stock that is not $400,000

I say Gateron Ink Yellow, but I have not tried’em all so I could be wrong.

The only think with the yellow inks is that they have reduced travel vs normal switches, which can be pretty off putting to some

Do they really? That’s pretty cool. Almost worth buying just for that.

A lot of people claim that green alps are the best linears and they have 0.5mm less keytravel than normal switches I think. I was wondering if it was possible to replicate them with an mx mod somehow.

NK Silk/Dry offer better value but I still consider Tealios to be the best linear switch.
